The Story so Far..

Richard has continuously created art since early childhood, a practice which continued throughout his professional architectural career and encompassed drawing, painting and sculpture. Since 2002 he embarked on a research project into the artistic and decorative potential of complex tiling. In 2016 he has made this work public with a series of exhibitions in Singapore, USA, Europe and Taiwan. A selection of these exhibitions is below. For more details refer to his bio.

The exhibition featured works on paper and works on aluminium, and closed with the launch of the book Strange Creatures: Complex Tessellations. Galleries and Dealers

Galleries and Dealers

Despite being produced in part with digital technology, the artworks are much better appreciated in real life than in photographs, as they are designed as physical objects that relate to human scale and the way we perceive patterns and objects, figure and ground. They reveal different patterns and structures as you approach and retreat from the artwork, while the pieces with gold or reflective metal or mirrors continually shift appearance depending on the light and their surroundings.

We really recommend you see the works in person, and learn more about the art direct from our wonderful dealers, so please contact them directly. Works are often on view in exhibitions or art fairs, so do check out Richard’s instagram for news. Richard Hassell is represented in USA by Walker Fine Art, in Europe by Arndt Fine Art, and in Taiwan by Gallery Sun. There may be framed works in these dealer’s inventories available for immediate purchase.

The rugs may be purchased from WOHA Being or direct from The Rug Maker, or through the galleries. While the rugs are generally made upon demand, with a lead time of around 9 weeks, there are some selected pieces in stock with the Rug Maker and Gallery Sun.
